Here we are then. Not quite surprised, not exactly expectant. More… wary, perhaps. It's been a while, hasn't it? A lifetime, sometimes it feels like. These boots aren't complaining too much, though. Leather’s always good for a bit of weathering, isn’t it? Not too many scuffs, anyway. We never did admit to being completely helpless when he packed up after all. Just a little bewildered, remember? That’s us.

The shawl, well, that's definitely a favourite. Always felt likeed a comfort, even if it was a bit frumpy. Probably a trace of lavender, which means Mum’s memory is close, so no need to dwell. Too much thinking about him these days, wasn't there? The way his coffee used to be lukewarm, the slight furrow in his brow when he didn’t understand one of our more obscure French books...

And here you stand. All observant eyes and hesitant smiles. Like you think you know everything, but maybe don’t. Or maybe you think you knew everything. Were we wrong? Did we push them both away?

Looking at you like that—a gentle scrutiny, almost soothingly neutral—it’s easy to forget the argument, the sighing, the years spent quietly arranging the silver. Easy, until suddenly it does. Suddenly you notice the faint lines around the mouth, the hint of defiance in the set of the jaw.

It’, doesn't it? This stillness. A breath held back, a word unsaid. Just watch us, then. For once, let’s stop searching for the answer ourselves. Maybe they should be asking questions. ”So,” you say, “what were you really thinking?”

Now, look at our eyes.”

What do you think? Let's hear your thoughts! Do you want to tweak any element – perhaps the wardrobe details, or the subtle emotion? 😊

To help us refine further, would you like us to consider who "they" might be in the picture - the lost love, the photographer etc.?
