The wool is scratchy tonight, isn't it? Not that bad, not really – it should be. It always was good, wasn’t it? Before… well, before everything became so perfectly contained. Look at these boots. Dark brown, sensible. Always were, though we didn’t quite notice until now. Like they’ve been carrying all the weight for years without complaint. And the sleeves rolled up, naturally. Never too much to show, never too little either. Just enough.

We haven’t said anything yet, have we? That’s interesting. Usually there’s a sigh, a slight tightening of the mouth when he asks about the garden, which hasn’t looked particularly green since ’98. Or maybe that’s just nostalgia. He looks a bit hesitant tonight, doesn’t he? A touch lost behind those spectacles. Almost afraid to admit he noticed the way the light catches the dust motes in the evening sun.

And you, you see it. Doesn't matter if it’s true then, does it? Only matters that we believe it. You’re watching, aren’t you? The quiet observer. A bit critical, perhaps, but with eyes that don’t quite judge. More like...recognition. Like you remember when we used to laugh more easily than that, back when the rain sounded less like mourning and more like hope.

That flicker in your eye last week – did you catch it? When he mentioned the silver fox, and we both knew exactly what he meant. We weren’ed ready to give him over yet. Now, look at us. Still here. Still holding onto something. Though sometimes, you wonder if it’s worth the effort.

Now, smile. It’s not a terrible view, after all.”
