“Another glass too many for last night, then?” I murmur, though we both knew it wasn’t just the wine. More like the decade since, really. This wool coat, inherited from Mother - always insisted it was ‘practical’, even if it does scratch like winter windchimes around our ankles. It feels comfortable enough tonight, familiar, unlike...well, everything lately.
Your eyes were narrowed when you arrived. Not hostile, not yet. Just…expectant. Like there’s still something left to decipher after all these years. Which there should be, shouldn't there? We weren’t perfect back then, no, nothing ever is. Too much laughter, maybe, drowned out some of the sighs. Or perhaps simply brave enough to ignore them.
This scarf—your favourite, vaguely remember the pattern, didn’t it? A subtle heather grey, easily overlooked amongst the chaos. It’s draped a little carelessly around your neck now, almost as if you don't quite notice it's there. Which is nice, isn’t it? The quietness. Lessens the risk of awkward words.
That flicker of recognition you gave us just now, by the fireplace, during those photos – did you see that? Almost missed it. Perhaps.
Now, look at us. Stuck, aren’, we? Not necessarily unhappy, just… hesitant. Always have been. So, go ahead. Take another glance. Don’t be afraid. After all, haven’t we had ages.”
