“There.” That’s what she always said, didn’t she? ‘Just loosen up.’ Like it was that simple, usually. A little less resistance than this, maybe. These days, everything feels… contained. This dress, for instance. The jade was her favourite colour, wasn't it? Emerald. Not too flashy, not quite hidden away. Just perfectly balanced. Almost. Notice the sleeve, then. Not completely untucked, certainly, but a suggestion, isn’ so? We liked those suggestions, once. Before – well, before it all went quiet.

It hasn’t been a loud quiet, necessarily. More of a gentle fading, hadn’t it? Like the light itself. See the way the sun caught your hair last week, when you visited? Warmth. Familiarity. It had felt almost easy, remembering that. Until today. Today the shadows seem bigger. And there’s the scent of cedarwood, of course. Your favourite cologne. Always has been. Makes you think back, doesn’t it? To evenings spent by the fireplace, arguing about books, laughing until our eyes watered…

This stillness, though. Is that doubt creeping in? Or simply acceptance that things rarely go exactly according to plan? Maybe it’s just the angle of the light.

You haven’t spoken for nearly five minutes. Aren’t supposed to, really. Just observe, they say. But still, you’re here. Looking. So, look longer. Don’t be afraid. Less chance of being forgotten that way, surely. Now, try not to stare too much. It can be rather intimidating, you see. Especially when you do.”
