The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn't it? Not terribly so, not usually - it’s our wool, after all, vaguely reminiscent of that summer by the sea, less salt than memory might suggest these days. A little more dust, perhaps. It’s been a while since we were close enough to notice. Or maybe we always did, those subtle shifts, and simply forgot to mention them.

You're staring, aren’t you? Not quite sure if it’s affectionate, really. More likely a slight apprehension. As if expecting us to break. We do tend to, don't we? See, there’s a trace of wine on your chin— didn’t even realize until now. Probably had a glass during dinner, last week. The roast was good, mostly. Your mother made it, of course. Always does. Almost perfectly bland, which is precisely how she wanted it. Comforting. Familiar. But sometimes, hadn’t thought about that in years.

Your eyes...they narrowed ever so subtly when you spoke about the garden. Said the roses weren’t blooming well this year. Little things, easily overlooked. Like the way the light caught your hair then, all tousled and golden.

We used to know exactly where to look, didn’ed we? Used to find each other even without needing to, tucked away in the crease of an armrest, the echo of a laugh. Now, it's almost silent, isn’t it? Except for the quiet tick of the clock, and the faint feeling that somewhere beneath the surface, under the layers of composure and carefully chosen outfits, lies a flicker of hope.

So, go ahead. Stare. And next time, try not to blink."
