It’s been five years. Five years since the predictable sigh, the dutiful packing, the quiet acceptance of the inevitable drift. And here you are. Looking back, predictably curious. A hint of fondness in those eyes, perhaps, though maybe that’s just because you were a handsome nuisance. We certainly weren't without our charm. Remembered all the way down to the scent of woodsmoke and rain, don't you think?

This cardigan—a bit woolly these days, isn’t it? Comfortably so. Feels familiar, doesn’t it? Like a well-worn favourite, even if it has a few loose threads. Just like us, then. Not quite as pristine as when you left. More than a few ghosts in the wardrobe, definitely. Maybe that’s why the dog barked less after you went away. Less noise to contend with.

You’re staring, aren’t you? That slightly skeptical tilt of the head. As if to say, “What’s she thinking?” Well, that’s the question, isn’t it? Did he leave us, or did we quietly pack ourselves into a suitcase and slip out while everyone was asleep? Probably didn’t matter which one it was, really. Didn’t exactly hurt, did it?

Not perfect, of course. Nothing ever is. But there’s warmth here, isn’t there? In the armchair, in the memory. Almost forgot about the chill outside until you turned around. So go ahead. Look closer. Let yourself see it. Or not. Either way, we’ve got time."
