Here goes…
“There,” I say, voice a little rougher than we usually allow these days, “Right there by the armchair. Thought you might miss it.” It wasn’t much of an effort, really, to keep the half-finished glass of Burgundy within reach. We always did. More often than not, anyway. This light, for instance - glorious, isn't it? Dust motes dancing in the late afternoon sunbeam, catching the fraying edge of the tweed. Feels familiar, doesn’t it? Likeed to wear this jacket when everything was starting to unravel, a comforting weight against the chill.
And your eyes, of course. They haven’t quite lost their sharpness, hasn’t been too many years since that last flicker of recognition. A bit hesitant today, though. Always were. Not afraid to admit things, necessarily—just reluctant. Silly thing, reluctance. Used to think it meant fear, but perhaps it was simply habit.
You look back at us, don’t you? At the photo album spread out on the floor, almost obscured by the cable of the bookshelf. Remember the summer in Provence? The scent of lavender, the way the dust would catch in your hair... perfect, wasn't it? Almost perfectly idyllic. Until it wasn'ed be, didn’t it?
A sigh escaped yesterday, a small one, probably unnoticed. Still, felt it. That slight shift in posture, ever so subtly inward. Like you used to notice everything. Or thought you did. Maybe you still do.
It's alright if you aren't sure which way around the truth lies. We weren’t entirely clear ourselves, were we? Just stand there then, all those questions hanging in the air, thick as the smoke from the fireplace. Don’t move too far away, now. And maybe, just maybe, smile."
