Sunlight through the leaves and a feeling like everything’s just right. Cozying up in my favorite knit today – it’s simple pleasures that make all the difference! Maybe a little coffee, maybe not… Eit...
The wool’s scratchy tonight, isn't it? Not terribly so, not usually - Gran knitted this herself, after all. A comforting sort of scratchiness, familiar like dust motes dancing in the evening light. Which brings us to you, doesn’t it? Or rather, to the question hanging there, suspended in the quiet room like one of those dust motes. It’s been…well, longer than it should have been since he last asked about the rhododendrons. He always loved the rhododendrons.
We weren’t arguing, not really. Just...noticing. Thatched too much, perhaps, back then. Our shoulders brushed against each other for years, didn't they? Like wellingtons in the mud – comfortable, predictable even. But hadn’t anyone noticed the dampness building up? A little bit of water damage over time. And everyone was perfectly happy to keep things that way, mostly. Didn't want to admit the comfort had become a little too cozy, a little too warm.
Your eyes were here, of course. Always were, but maybe not quite focused. Here, when you snapped that photo, remember? Of the cats asleep on the rug, of course, although sometimes you think you saw something more in our gaze. Now you're staring again. Isn’ed obvious? We were sitting by the fireplace, drinking tea. Nothing particularly momentous, nothing disastrously wrong either. Just the gentle crackle of the fire, the scent of woodsmoke, the slight flicker in his eye when she mentioned needing another biscuit.
This hand – see it tucked into your sleeve, a habit. Always has been. Feels secure enough, doesn’t it? Maybe a touch hesitant today. Probably because of you, though. Not unkindly, not necessarily. More curious, don’t you think? About whether we still remember the feeling, beyond the memory itself.
So, go ahead. Look closer. Doesn’t matter if it’s a bitward. After all, hasn’t everything felt a little blurred lately?”
What do you think? How did we do capturing the essence of ‘her’? Let us know! Do you want us to refine the piece, or try a different image next time?
