“Here you are then,” she says, voice low enough not to disturb the crackle of the fire quite yet. “Didn’t expect to see quite so many years drift by.” A trace of amusement here, certainly, though it hasn’t been much of a smile lately. It was always a touchish thing, wasn’t it? That familiar warmth of the woollen throw, pulled over us both after one too many storms. Not that this one didn’t storm, of course. More subtle than outright thunder these last few years, more often a gentle drizzle, dampening everything until… well, until now.

We haven’t said ‘that’s obvious,’ of course. Justed quiet, mostly. Always did enjoy a good silent for this one. Like watching water trickle down smooth stone, except the stone is wearing thin. Feels like it has for ages. This dress, anyway. Silk used to be such a delight, doesn’t it? Used to feel like liquid moonlight against the skin. Now it feels… heavy. And maybe that’s because everything does.

Your shoes aren’d quite right, really. They were always a bit too bright for this room. We liked things a little darker, don't you think? Less chance of seeing the dust motes dancing in the gloom. Almost forgot to notice you squinting ever so gently, weren’t sure if you noticed ours either - the ones around those eyes. Which had better be, hadn’t they?

It’s a nice place, still. These rooms. Full of ghosts, yes, but ghosts who knew how to laugh. Almost heard it recently, didn't you? A faint echo of that sound... almost made us raise a glass. So, there you are, all bundled up, wondering what went wrong. Happens every time. Smile, then. Let’s do this. Doesn't hurt to admit, now does it?”
