The silk feels cool against bare skin, doesn’t it? Not too cold, not quite right – always was about finding that temperature, wasn’t it? This dress, emerald green – bold choice for us, some might say, back then. A little much perhaps, but no more than we were willing to bear. Remember the wedding, almost? The champagne bubbles, the hesitant smiles…before the rain started, naturally. It usually did.

There’s a slight crease in the fabric of the sleeve, don’t you notice? From when you brushed past last time, probably, without really noticing us. Or maybe you noticed and didn’t care. That’s been the debate for years, hasn't it? Whether we cared enough.

Your eyes are a bit wary today, aren't they? Like you’re expecting a flicker of recognition, a hint of the spark that used to burn so brightly...or perhaps afraid of it. We weren’t always afraid, of course. More often than not there was laughter, heady with wine and secrets. And the way he would stand behind you, all angles and quiet confidence. Such a good man, that David.

Now, it’s mostly just us three again, isn’ing? Just the ghosts of memories and the lingering scent of cedarwood from the perfume you wore. Which brings us back to tonight, really. To this room, bathed in moonlight through the heavy curtains. To you.

It’s comfortable, being still like this, isn't it? Comfortable even. Though sometimes, late at night, when the city sounds outside fade away, you can hear the echo of something missing. Maybe it’s fear, maybe it’s hope…or maybe it’s simply asking yourself, quietly, “Were we ever truly lost?”
