These boots, for instance. Not bad, these Kicker loafers, certainly better than last time – the ones thatched so badly we nearly drowned in them during the summer storm. These are dark brown, relatively unscathed by the dog hair - mostly. Feels comfortable enough.

It feels like a lifetime ago, doesn't it? Or maybe just yesterday when he was here, sipping his tea, humming quietly while reading the paper. A glass invariably left half full, a crease perfectly formed in the newspaper. Heh. Such an easy man. Almost too easy.

Now, it’s quiet again. This room has been ours for five years, hasn't it? Five years since the question hung heavy after the packing boxes were hauled away, leaving only the scent of cedar and a certain wistful reluctance. We never really said goodbye, did we? Just drifted apart, like leaves caught in a gentle current.

And look at you, standing there all poised and expectant. The camera, perhaps? Always focused, not quite knowing what to expect. Like you thought you might catch us then, hadn't you? Before the dust settled, before the slightness became too obvious.
