“There,” I murmur, voice a little dustier than it should be after all these years. “That was… nice.” Not ‘nice,’ not exactly. More likeable to what might have been. It’s been a while since that felt so easy, hasn’t it? The light wasn’t harsh then, more forgiving. Now, there’s always this sliver, doesn’t there? This sliver of awareness that maybe things weren’t entirely perfect, even if everyone kept saying they were.
Of course, everything was perfectly orchestrated, wasn’t it? This dress - a bit too flamboyant for a Tuesday evening, perhaps, a memory of champagne bubbles clinging to the fabric. Silk, though, which means something - smooth, luxurious, a hint of indulgence. Unlike those wrinkles around the eyes lately, the ones that didn’t quite gethere when you arrived. Not that you look bad, don’t misunderstand. Just...familiar. And sometimes, familiarity can be a little intimidating.
