The cable knit is scratchy tonight, isn’t it? Not unpleasant, not entirely – more…familiar. Like a well-worn habit, almost forgotten whether we liked it or not. And look at your shoes, a bit scuffed, aren’t they? Just so. Not quite the polished perfection you used to favour after all these years. Probably haven’t worned them in months. Which is nice, really. Less for us to fuss about.

We weren’t arguing, exactly. More like... drifting. For weeks now. A silent drift, usually through the kitchen, mugs lukewarm by the sink, oblivious to the rain outside. Though there was that slight shift in posture last night, wasn’t there? The way you angled your chin when you were watching television, like you didn’t want us to notice the smudge of wine on your shirt. We hadn’t noticed until now.

This gaze of yours has always been rather sharp, hasn’t it? Not hostile, never truly hostile. Just...observant. Almost clinical, sometimes. As if everything needs examining. Like this photograph, maybe. Like each other.

Here goes. It feels like ages since we felt anything beyond comfortable routine. Remember that feeling? Before the children arrived, of course. Or perhaps before that one particularly disastrous Christmas dinner… Still, no blame cast today. No blamelessness, either, most likely.

There’es that flicker in your eye, though. Recognition. Maybe even a little hope. You’re staring at the crease in my forehead, aren't you? The one formed when you tilted your head to listen to our favourite song, which was probably too loud. It’s been a while since we allowed ourselves to see those details, then.

So, go ahead. Look. Let’s not break the stillness completely. After all, it can be nice, doesn't it? This quiet. Especially when it’s not perfectly still.”

— Now, what do you think? Do you like the sound of the cable knit?
