“There. That’s the one.” It always was, wasn’t it? The angle of the light hitting the sleeve - a little too much silk perhaps, for such an everyday scene. Not that many people noticed, not really. They saw the wardrobe, certainly – the cashmere, naturally, Italian wool trousers, the slight riskiness of the teal. It’s been years since he asked about the risks. Funny, isn’t it, how easily those details fade when the big questions don’t.

We haven’t spoken properly in five, maybe six years. Since the gallery showing went sideways. Everyone said it was the wine, but did anyone actually ask us? Probably not. More likely everyone assumed it was inevitable, didn’t they? Like the way the dust settles on everything else - on the unsaid words, on the half-remembered laughter.

Your eyes were a bit hesitant today, weren’t they? A flicker of surprise more than expectation. Like you remembered something, but couldn’t quite place which memory to pin it to. Perhaps you felt guilty, then. For leaving. Or so you think.

This hand, resting on the table - it’s warm, definitely warmer than it has been lately. We used to be closer, hadn’d we? Less distance between the shoulders, less space needed between the beds. A touch of melancholy, no doubt – a beautiful thing, melancholic. Makes the silences almost comfortable. Almost.

Now look at us. Still a little awkward, still holding onto ghosts. And you there, standing with the camera, a silent observer...or are you?”
