(A slight turn of the head, left shoulder subtly forward. A favorite cable knit sweater - a little worn around the cuffs - feels comforting against the skin, though perhaps a bit too familiar. The skirt, a simple wool crepe, brushes gently against the shin.)

“There.” That’s what she said to say, didn’t it? Just ‘there.’ Not much room for argument then, not really. Just… there. Like it was always supposed to be here, wasn’t it? This quietness. It hasn’t been entirely silent, of course. Mostly just the tick of the clock, the rustle of the leaves outside when your car pulled up last week. Didn’t dare expect you to actually say something, did we?

We haven’t expected many things, really, for a while. Not since... well, not since quite recently. Too soon to name it, maybe. “Too soon” sounds so decisive. Almost hopeful. This sweater has seen its share of winters, doesn’t it? Seen us both bundled up, trying to keep warm, even if sometimes one of us felt a little colder than the other.

You’ve got that look now, don’dwe? A hesitant curiosity. Not exactly thrilled to see us, not yet anyway. Maybe a flicker of recognition – remember those nights by the fire? Before the embers died down. Feels like ages ago, but also yesterday.

Your gaze drifts back to the window, doesn't it? To the rain, probably. Let it wash away all the obvious traces, the way we used to. Don’t stare too hard. We wouldn’t want you to notice the trace of coffee spilled on the sleeve this morning, either. Small details. Always small details.

So, yeah. There. Looking at us, aren’t we? And maybe, just maybe, remembering a time when the light wasn’t quite so dim. Now, does that sound like a welcome, or simply more expectations?”
