The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not bad, not necessarily. Just… familiar. Like an old habit, one that hasn’t quite broken down into comfortable routine yet. These boots, for instance - haven’t seen them worn in nearly a decade, but they still know their way to the scuffed heel. And the dress... well, it was expensive when he bought it, wasn't it? A little too muchish pink perhaps, though that didn't matter then, did it?

There was always something about his eyes, really. The way they tilted ever so slightly when he thought you weren’t noticing. A slight roll of the tongue sometimes, a subtle smirk after which everything felt permissible. That laugh, too. A brief respite against all the quietness. We used to argue over whether there was enough quietness, of course. Always with the quietness.

Now, you’re standing there. Unblinking. Which isn’t entirely surprising. It’s been a while. Longer than a few since last week, certainly. Your hands are steady enough, aren't they? No obvious eagerness, no hesitant touch. Just observation. As if the messiness – the slight crease in the sleeve, the hint of wine spilled on the rug – is a bitier secret and you’ve only dared to look at it once.

We were listening to Debussy earlier, remember? ‘Clair de Lune’. He liked to say it sounded like rain on glass. Or maybe that was just the sound of him snoring.

Here goes. There’, yes, a flicker. Didn’t think you noticed the trace of lipstick on the collar, either. Not a perfectly polished smile, more like a reluctant acceptance. Maybe, just maybe, you don’t seem quite so daunting today.

So go ahead, look at us. Now, don't stand so close—we might actually start remembering."
