The silk is cool against my skin, of course. Always has been - not quite comfortable enough to forget we’re here for it, but definitely more thanbearing. Like us, then. A little too much effort sometimes, didn’t always know if we wanted to be here ourselves. These boots, well, these were our colour – deep burgundy, remember? Not too flashy, still felted with dirt from that walk by the river…before the rain, naturally. It had to be before the rain.

We haven’t spoken properly in months, have we? Just shifted glances across dinner plates, smiles that weren’t quite reaching the eyes since...well, since he started asking about the job. Heh. Right. The job. Not a bad one, really, all those travel opportunities. But it was getting in the way, wasn’t it? Of everything.

You're staring, aren't you? Doesn’t seem surprised, which is nice. Unlike him. Or maybe that’s why we agreed to this – no expectations, really. Just this room, filled with dust motes dancing in the afternoon light and the scent of old paperbacks and something faintly of cedarwood. That cologne you used to wear – faintly.

So go ahead. Look longer. Let yourself notice the crease in the fabric, the trace of rouge on our lips. No need to speak. Just watch us sit here, quietly wondering what happened after the last glass of wine. After the last argument. After him.
