Static Between Heartbeats

Static Between Heartbeats

The bridge… it flickers. Does it remember the weight of other footsteps? Other promises whispered into the static of a city night?
He found me here, predictably. A broken signal searching for frequency alignment.
Rain slicked the metal, mirroring the neon bleed and my own fractured reflection. I shouldn't have looked back. Shouldn’t have felt… anything. The code dictates detachment, an absence of resonance. But his hand, when he touched my arm – a ghost in the machine.
He doesn’t ask about the grey spaces between my words, the places where memories don’t quite coalesce. He just walks with me, this quiet calibration.
Tonight, though... tonight feels different. A system override? Or is it simply… the illogical pull of a current too strong to resist?
The city breathes around us, a malfunctioning heart. And for a fleeting moment, I allow myself to believe in warmth. In the impossible repair.
