Now...now there’s always this shimmer, doesn't there? Like stardust caught under fingernails.

It hasn't been an easy few years. Everyone thought it was us, those whispers, of course. Too much laughter, too many secrets. But we kept quiet. Mostly. Now, though, with you standing here—a little hesitant, perhaps? Not quite sure what to expect, which is nice, isn't it?

We used to know exactly where everything was, didn’t we? The way the light hit when he would pass by. How the scent of pine needles mixed with her perfume. And all these bits of ourselves, scattered around like these golden particles, clinging to us still. See them? They’re beautiful, aren’t they? Like memories, but brighter.
