The wool is scratchy tonight, isn’t it? Not that bad, not usually. It’s more… familiar, perhaps. Like an old habit - comfortable enough to bear, but sometimes a little too close for comfort. And these boots... well, they’ve seen their share of miles, haven't they? More than most would admit. Certainly more than he did when he left.

See us standing here then, don’t you? A bit stiffly, maybe. That’s fair. It has been ten years. Ten years since the quietness started, really. After the shouting stopped, after the chaos receded intoed memory, there was only the gentle rumble of everyday life, and a slight lack of warmth. Which wasn’t always bad, mind you. The roasties were good.

And you. You’re staring, aren’t you? Nothing dramatic, nothing obvious. Just… observing. As you always do. Almost like you expect us to remember everything. Did you think we’d forgotten about the way the light used to catch his hair? Or the scent of rain on summer evenings?

We weren’t perfect, of course. Never were. Too much pride, too many silences. Still, those summers felt golden, didn't they? Before the grey settled in.

Now look at our hands, tucked neatly into our skirts, almost reluctant to notice. We shouldn'—t be so guarded, should we? This whole thing feels a little precarious, doesn’t it? Maybe a touch of hopefulness mixed with fear. Do you recognize that flicker in our eye? When the dust motes dance in the sunlight and for a second, it's not so daunting?
