Here you stand then, don’t quite look surprised. Not much to expect, really - a little tooed eye shadow perhaps, for such a long time. This dress, though. The linen was a good choice, wasn’t it? Feels familiar, almost like yesterday’s rain - clinging damply, but not unpleasant. Itches a bit when you focus on it, doesn’t it? Like memory itself.

We haven't spoken properly in nearly three years, not since…well, hasn't that been long enough? Or maybe only ever so long. We were always good at letting things settle into comfortable silences, weren’t we? Comfortable, if a little chilly. Remember that Christmas, snowdrifts outside while everyone else bundled up warm, us shivering inside, mostly by ourselves.

About the drinks, the late nights, the feeling that everything was perfect...except, of course, it never truly was.

A flicker of recognition crossed your face when the housekeeper brought out those biscuits – hadn’led them perfectly, remember? A small victory. Maybe that’s why you came today. Not exactly eager acceptance, more like gentle curiosity mixed with a need to be sure. Well, hearken closely then. Let’s see if we can admit that, beneath all the guardedness, the slight exasperation, maybe just a little bit of warmth still remains.

Now, smile. Just a tiny one. And don’t stare quite so intently at the wrinkles.”
