“Right then.” That’s usually how it starts, isn't it? Not always spoken aloud, more often felt – that subtle shift in posture, the way he shifts his weight when he thinks we don't notice. He's got his coat on, of course. Always bundled up against everything except the memory of warmth. This room certainly wasn’t cold last time, was it? More… hopeful. Likeed the light filtering through the leaves then, didn’t we? Though maybe that’s just nostalgia talking.

These jeans were a good choice, weren’t they? Dark enough to hide the evidence of all those late nights, not so dark as to be obvious. And this cardigan – Dad knitted it, remember? Slightly itchy, definitely loved. Feels familiar, doesn’,t it? This feeling. It’s been a while since we really acknowledged it, hasn’t it? Just settled into the quietude, these days. Comfortable, mostly. Too comfortable, some might say.

We never did quite figure out what went wrong, did we? No dramatic fight, no shouting necessarily. Just… drifted apart slowly, silently, like fallen leaves in autumn. Your – yes, your – question hangs in the air now, doesn’t it? Almost hesitant. Are you wondering why we haven’t set a date for years? Maybe.
