“There.” That’s the third time you’ve tilted your head today. Not much to it, really. A subtle tilt - like you think we should all be used to this by now, shouldn't there be? Like it’s not so strange, this quietness that always seems to hang here, doesn’t it? Like the scent of old wool and rain. These boots were comfortable enough, these ones. Supposedly practical for wandering around the garden when he went out hunting, though most often we ended up outside anyway.

Feels like yesterday, sometimes, the way the light fell on his cheek then. Golden. Now... well, now it’s more likely grey. And damp. This shawl was a good choice, wasn't it? Cashmere, of course, expensive, which means everyone expected us to hold onto it. Though maybe we didn’t expect quite so much. Just enough to keep warm, perhaps. Enough to stave off the chill that’s been settling inside ever since…well, ever since.

You haven’,t said anything obvious, not yet. That’s nice. Doesn’t need to be noisy, does it? Just a hint of curiosity, usually. Or perhaps a touch of trepidation. We weren't perfect, not then. Bit too much wine, probably. Too many silences ourselves. Remembered him saying that once, about the wine. Said we liked it dark.

Now look at you, standing there, bundled almost perfectly against the cold. A little hesitant, definitely. Almost like you don't want to break something. But we'd both grown accustomed to the cracks, hadn’t we? The slight wrinkle in the skirt, the faint trace of lipstick on the glass, the way the sunlight caught the dust motes dancing in the room every evening. It hasn't all been bad, has it?

So go ahead. Tilt your head again. Let the stillness settle. Perhaps if you stare hard enough, you'll see it – the flicker of recognition in our eyes. After all, we've been waiting for you, haven't we?”
