Here we go…

“Right then.” That’s probably what you were thinking to say. A hesitant ‘right then.’ Not quite a question, not quite an expectation – more like a hopefulness clinging onto the edge of something fragile. Likeed the scarf, didn’t you? The wool was a bit scratchy last time, hadn't it? Always was, these things. Makes sense, doesn’t it? Bit worn around the edges ourselves, both of us. Not necessarily badly worn, mind. Just... lived in.

Feels like ages since he said yes, for one. To come round. After all these years. Funny thing about him, isn't it? Still handsome, even with the grey starting to creep into his hair – though perhaps less interested than we used to be. And those eyes... still holdingsome trace of recognition when he looks. We certainly weren't blind. Were we? Probably too comfortable. Too much tea, maybe. Too many silences that shouldn’t have been so silent.

This dress, well, it’s familiar. Felt brave wearing it today, didn’t we? Usually, it's too much, too bold. But tonight felt different. Less afraid to show up. Maybe that’s why you noticed the dust motes dancing by the window earlier—we haven’t really moved them in a while.

There's a flicker, hasn't there? In your eye when you look back. Almost a memory of laughter. Or did that happen during the summer house, outside London? Hard to remember sometimes which ones were ours.

A little nervous, aren't you? It’s alright. It always is. This has been a long time coming, hasn’t it?”

Now, over to you! Let us know what you thought of the monologue. Do you agree with her assessment? Is she hopeful, wary, or simply resigned?
