The cashmere feels nice tonight, doesn’t it? Not too fussy, not entirely comfortable – just there. Like us used to be, mostly. Or so you think. Looked a little rumpled today, didn’t you? Just a trace of sleep in those eyes—not enough to hide them completely, though. That’s good, isn’t it? We both know there was always a bit too much hiding.

For years, anyway. Remember when the light used to catch your cheekbone perfectly? Before the argument about the gardenias, of course. Everyone said it wasn't our fault – blame the gardener, naturally. Silly things, humans. Always needing an excuse.

We haven't spoken of the gardenias for ages, really. Didn’t need to, did we? Too painful sometimes, all that remembering. This posture…slightly defensive, perhaps. The shoulders ever so subtly turned towards the window – the rain outside has been relentless lately, mirroring something inside us. A greyishness, definitely.

You were staring then, weren’t you? For almost five minutes without a word. Five precious minutes, either way. Maybe a hint of curiosity in your gaze. Doubtful, probably. It's easier than admitting anything, isn’t it? Easier than saying ‘hello’.

That slight curve of your lip – a flicker of amusement maybe? Were you laughing inwardly at our awkwardness? Or was it more hopeful than that? Let’s hope so, shall we? After all these years...
