Here's the Monologue:
“Right then.” That’s probably what you were thinking when you stepped out onto the terrace. A little bit surprised, perhaps. It has been rather quiet for a while, hasn’t it? Not badly quiet, not yet. Just…quiet. These linens haven’t felt quite so cool against our skin since...well, since he left. This dress, a simple silk crepe – no fuss, no bother, usually. But tonight, maybe too obvious. The blue reminds you doesn’t it? Of those summer evenings by the sea, all salt spray and laughter that didn’t always reach our ears.
We weren’t shouting, never did much of that. More of an absence, really. Likeed to be comfortable, hadn’t we? Comfortable even when things weren’t exactly perfect. Your camera feels familiar, somehow. Cold metal, familiar weight. Not intrusive, not today anyway. Almost like you don't expect us to notice. Which, mostly, we don’t. Too many years ago, perhaps, to remember precisely which side to turn.
That slight tilt of the head, that one towards the roses – still blooming bravely, despite everything. Remember them? They loved these roses. We used to drink wine amongst them, oblivious often enough. Though sometimes, wasn’ ‘t it? Sometimes there was the faintest scent of something missing.
Now, you’re watching us. Silently, of course. And after all this time, that's comforting isn't it? Maybe a little daunting, but mostly comforting. So go ahead, keep looking. Let’s not break the spell. After all, who else will?”
