The wool’s starting to prickle around the edges tonight, hasn’t it? Not an awful prickle – moreish, really, like memory itself. It’s been years, hasn’t it? Too many for certain, sometimes. Or not enough. This dress was always good at hiding things, didn’t know we needed so much concealing anyway. A touch too dark, perhaps - charcoal grey with a hint of something darker still, don't you think? Like coffee stains, maybe – remnants of our mornings.

There was rain earlier, of course. Always is when there’s potential here, isn’t there? The scent still hangs in the air, faint but present, of damp earth and woodsmoke. We were arguing about whether he liked usda or not – silly thing, ever did. Said the potatoes weren’t firm enough. He probably meant them, of course. Everything tended to be “too much” or “not quite.”

Now you’re standing there, all angles and light. Slightly apprehensive, aren’t you? That’s nice. Makes it interesting. We haven’t had anyone stand very close since...well, let’, not dwell on that. Thatched roof above, perfect, doesn’t matter if it’s a bit draughty.

Here, then. No need to say anything obvious. Just look. At our eyes, at least. See that flicker? Not quite resentment, though. More curiosity than irritation. Probably.

And those hands, perfectly poised by the fireplace, reflecting the firelight back at you—almost invitingly. So, do you? Do you want to?”
