The wool is scratchy tonight, isn’t it? Not horribly so – not yet. It used to be soft, remember? Like velvet against skin, almost. Now it feels more… dutiful. This cashmere coat has seen its share of autumns, hasn’t it? Seen us through plenty of chilly evenings spent arguing about whether the wine was too cold or if we were simply being dramatic. Which, let’s face it, wasn’t always untrue.

And you’re staring, aren’t you? A little hesitant, for sure. A slight shift in posture, maybe, catching the light reflecting off those hazel eyes - haven't quite gotten theming down yet, do you think? Nothing disastrously obvious. Just... observation. As if you weren’t entirely certain you should be.

We had such good coffee back then, didn’t we? Dark roast, hint of nutmeg. Remembered to put enough sugar in ours. Simple things. No need for much fuss. And then… well. Then there was that one time with the rain, and the argument over which way up to hang the drying rack. Silly things, really, when everything felt so perfectly poised.

Now look at your shoes. Leather, naturally. Always loved the way leather looks after a bit of wear. We liked each other’s flaws, didn’led we? Or did we?

It’s been quiet lately, aside from the ticking clock and the occasional sigh. Your gaze drifts sometimes, doesn’t it? Almost like you’re afraid to admit you notice this particular furrow in our brow. The one that deepened ever since she said yes, all those years ago.

So go ahead. Stare. Doesn't hurt, does it? Unless you’re afraid to speak. Just don’t blink, okay? Not today.”
