The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not unpleasant, not exactly - cashmere, really, but sometimes when the light catches it all wrong…yes, there’s a slight prickle. Like the memory itself. We haven’t said much since she stepped out of the car, have we? Just those hesitant nods, the way she shifted her weight then didn’t. It’s been seven years, isn’t it? Seven years of little ghosts, of assuming blame where perhaps none was due.

She’s wearing your blue scarf today. A bit dusty, maybe, though we don’t usually notice. Too afraid to admit it, aren’t we? Afraid of admitting anything, for that matter. Like how good it felt last time everything wasn’t quite so brittle. The scent of rain and woodsmoke, the easy turn of phrase, the way the city lights caught in your eyes...like stars, almost.

See us, then? Here, sitting by the window – always by the window, never too far from the world, yet perfectly enclosed within ourselves. We were happy once, weren’t we? Or at least, we thought we were. Until the argument about the bookshop, of course. Silly thing, that one. So many silly things.

Now, look at us. She’s staring back, a touch wary, a hint of curiosity. Maybe even a flicker of hope, buried deep beneath the carefully constructed facade. And us? Well, we’re tilting our head ever so gently, aren’t we? Haven't moved in ages, really. This stillness—it's comfortable, familiar. Even with the tension humming underneath.

Just breathe, darling. Breathe through the silence. Remember why you agreed to come. Didn't need to say anything, did we? Just needed to be seen. Now, let’s ask her – silently, of course. “Remember that night?” – only, of course, we do.”

How does that sound? Would love to hear which version resonates most!
