Here. It always comes back to here, doesn’t it? This small room, these quiet angles. The light was good today, wasn’t it? Not too harsh, not yet too willing to admit things were fading. That’s why you came, isn’t it? Not for any grand reason, no. Just…to come.

These hands, though. They look so familiar, don’t they? Like they should be reaching out, but aren’t quite brave enough. A little bit hesitant around the wool of this cardigan – cashmere, naturally, never cheap about comfort, even if it’s often found within ourselves. And those shoes, dark brown leather, well worn – haven’t needed much polishing since that autumn. Or maybe that’s the point, hasn't it? We didn't need manyings to be polished off.

There's a trace of dust motes dancing in the sunlight, the scent of chamomile brewing – you liked chamomile – a hint of rain outside, softlying against the windowpanes. Nothing dramatic, nothing to remind us too clearly of all that has been said, and all that hasn’t.

We weren’t arguing, not really. More of a gentle current flowing through the stillness, hadn’t been for five minutes, perhaps, since last time. That slight turn of the head, remember? When you looked away when we spoke of leaving.

Now you’re looking at us. At us. Maybe with curiosity. Certainly with some measure of expectation. Did he say something, then? About how nice it was to see us? Was that right, after all? To simply find each other again, without needing to explain everything.

A ghost of a smile playing on your lips. Almost believable. Almost.

It feels like ages ago, sometimes. Doesn’ t it? Like it’s only yesterday.

So, go ahead. Look longer. Let yourself notice. After all, haven't we both been doing that for years?"
