You’re standing there, aren't you? Not staring exactly—more…observing. Like you always did. That slightly skeptical tilt of the eyebrow, though. We never really learned to ignore that one, not entirely. Did you think we were fools then, all those years ago, wrapped up in a silver thread of certainty? Probably.

We haven’t spoken for seven years, hasn’t been any need to with such quiet agreement until now. Just this sliver of recognition, like dust motes dancing in a sunbeam. And us, still draped in ghosts. The silk scarf, a splash of summer rain blue against the grey – your favorite color, remember? Though yours was more often charcoal than actually seen.

Your boots are scuffed, predictably. Always were a little rough ‘round the edges, weren't they? Nothing wrong with that, necessarily. Our comfort zone used to be a tangle of worn leather and half-remembered scents. Now it’s just this room, a little dusty, certainly cooler without your warmth.
