The wool’s always itchy around the cuffs tonight, doesn't it? Not unpleasant, not entirely - more…familiar discomfort. Like remembering something should be there, but aren’t quite sure what. Your eyes were narrowed when you arrived, naturally. Always were good at that, weren’t you? Watching. Without needing much to do. Just standing there, quiet as dust motes dancing in the candlelight. Which, of course, was after dark. That wased the point, wasn't it? The darkness suited us both well enough.

This dress—a bit too many ruffles, perhaps, for such an occasion. Husband said so, anyway. A little frivolous, he thinks. As if everything isn’t, sometimes. Though, who needs his approval, really? We haven’t needed it for years. Here, though, don’t get ideas. It's comfortable. Comfortable and familiar, like these lines etched round the corners of our mouths - traces of laughter, mostly. And a touch of grief. Always a touch of grief.

You’re staring again, then. Didn’t think you would miss the way the light caught in your hair last time, did you? Here – let it catch yours now. Let it pool on those stubborn strands that never seem to fall into place. Notice how the silver catches with them. It hasn'ing been all bad, has it? This life, this house, even this particular set of troubles.

Just remember to breathe. Easier than letting go, usually. See? There it is. Almost a smile. Now, don’t look so surprised. After all this time... Well, maybe not ‘all’ this time. Isn’t that right?”

Notes on possible interpretation:

  • We’ve leaned towards a melancholic, slightly aloof vibe, reflected by the wardrobe choice (perhaps a silkie!), and sense of contained emotion.
  • Lots of opportunity to pick up on details in the picture itself – the lighting, the setting, the posture.
