The wool’s scratchy tonight, isn't it? Not unpleasant, not really, but always there. Like memory itself - sometimes sharp and clear, more often softened by distance. And yours certainly has been. A good few years, hasn’t it? Too many for some to be comfortable saying out loud, perhaps. Though, didn't hear much objection when you turned up, all rumpled charm and hesitant smile. Just… quiet, mostly. Always was, wasn’t there?

That photograph caught us perfectly, then. The rain outside blurring into grey, reflecting in the puddle already forming beneath the terrace table. We were laughing, weren’t we? Before the argument, before the drinks started flowing too freely, before everything began to fray. Or so we told ourselves. It felt important at the time, that laugh. Real, somehow. More real than anything lately.

You’re staring, aren’t you? Aren’t you always. A little wary, maybe. As if our messiness is unsettling. Well, it should be. Didn’t exactly go smoothly, did it? That brief return after all, the hopeful glance exchanged over coffee... Then back to the city, and the carefully constructed lives. Now, decades later, here you are.

We haven’,t said ‘goodnight’ properly in ages. Just look at those hands, almost touching, yet miles apart. Almost.

So, yes, you're staring. And for a second, the doubt fades away. Maybe it doesn’t need to be perfect, this meeting. Doesn't need to be. Perhaps just remembering where the light used to be.”
