(The wool scarf is scratchy tonight, isn’t it?) It always was, though we never said so. Not really. Just a slight tug here, too tight there - easily overlooked amongst the years, the quiet evenings, the almost certainly perfect wine. That’s why you’re here, of course. The obvious choice for decades, even after… well, after everything but the occasional polite nod at the twins’ birthdays. A little hesitant today, aren’t you? Always were good at being hesitant. Like standing on the edge of something familiar, yet terrifyingly uncertain.

This skirt, dark green velvet – felt like comfort then, doesn’t it? A bit stuffy now, perhaps. Bit much against the grey light creeping through the window. Your grandmother loved this room, didn’t she? All these antique chairs, each with its own story to tell...and ours, naturally, which has been mostly whispered about until now.

We weren’t shouting, not ever truly. More like letting the steam gather behind the eyes, hadn’t we? This gaze, then – haven’t you been staring quite often enough? It wasn’t necessarily adoration, more a certain expectation, a knowledge that underneath all the gentle distance lay warmth. Did you remember that, sometimes? Before the doubts started to bloom like stubborn roses around us.

See, we both knew things weren' t going perfectly, obviously. That small crack in the china, maybe that’s where it began. One dropped teacup, one unspoken argument... Now look at us, perched here, thirty years later. A little dusty, a touch wary.

A flicker of recognition in your eye when the housekeeper brought out those biscuits last week. Small victories. So, go ahead. Let yourself come closer. There's no need to be afraid. We don’t know if either of us wanted this so much, did we? But here we are, watching you, wondering if we should say something—or if, finally, it’s alright to simply sit here in the silence, and let the feeling roll back."

Now, turn to the picture and tell us – what does your reaction seem like?
