The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not unpleasant, not exactly - certainly more comforting than the memory of last summer, though that was always rather prickly itself. It’s been… well, too long. Longer than we dared admit to for years, perhaps. And you’re staring, aren’t you? That slight furrowed brow, the way the light catches the dust motes dancing off those dark brown eyes. Always observant, even when we don’t want to be.

It wasn't that bad, did it? The falling out. Just a bit of noise, really. A little too much clinging, a touch too little letting go. We were good at being a mess, weren’t we? Beautifully chaotic. This cashmere shawl, a gift, almost - slightly worn now, the sheep probably remembers us. Comfortably familiar, despite the threads.

Here, then. Here with you. No need for words, usually. Unless there are. Which there rarely are, anymore. More often, it’s just this. This quietness. Like after rain - the scent of damp earth hangs in the air, but no one mentions the storm.

You look hesitant, don’t lie, you do. Didn’t quite expect us back, did you? Or maybe you didn’t want to show it. Almost afraid of feeling something, weren’t you? Afraid of remembering how easily we used to fall apart, and equally easily find our way back together.

So, keep staring. Let the stillness settle. Maybe, just maybe, if we both allow it, the sound of our breathing will break through.”
