The wool scratches just so, doesn't it? Not too much, not yet. This cardigan has seen its share of quiet nights, which means it's probably used to being held together by threadbare hope and a little bit of stubbornness. And us… well, us hasn’t been quite so loud in a while.

Right then. It was brewing, wasn’t it? That little flicker after he said “dinner,” didn’t expect such a hesitant ‘yes’. He always liked things straightforward, him. Unlike these wrinkles around the eyes, haven’t had a good look at them since...well, a lifetime ago feels apt enough.

There’s a trace of coffee still clinging to the sleeve of this dress, dark and familiar. We both loved that particular blend, strong and sometimes bitter, much like the way he looked when she left. Didn't really show any emotion then, did he? Just a tightening, a subtle withdrawal. Like watching rain through glass.

And there you were, standing awkwardly near the doorway, camera strapped across your chest. A bit expectant, perhaps. As if your gaze could finally break through all the years of carefully constructed distance. Which, maybe, it can. If we allow it.

We weren’t sure why you came back, were we? Or maybe you don’t know. Maybe you simply needed something to photograph.
