The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn't it? Not unpleasant, not really - more... familiar. Like an old favorite sweater worn a little too tight around the shoulders. It’s been years since anyone noticed that, hasn’t it? Years since he noticed, probably, except when he was noticing something else entirely – usually, those rather stubborn creases in the skirt. This one’s a goodish shape though, wouldn't you say? Dark green, always has been. A bit dull sometimes, maybe, compared to the emerald of the forest after a rain.

There was that laugh then, wasn't there? Before. The scent of woodsmoke and wet leaves, obviously. We were arguing about whether the light washted better by the window or outside, silly thing. He thought we shouldered it all, him and the woodpile. Said it was masculine. Well, who asked his opinion anyway?

You’re staring, aren’t you? Silently enough, mostly. That’s nice. Less jarring than a shout, certainly. Perhaps a hint of surprise in your eyes – no, don't look so guilty. It's been quiet out here, haven’nt it? All these years. Quiet, and lonely. Almost comfortable loneliness, most nights.

This frown, is it always present? Or did it deepen slightly when she mentioned the cat hadn't had its cream last week? Probably didn’t. Though, you do seem to remember every single time. And that sparkle… almost forgotten, isn’t it? It used to be brighter.

Just watch closely. Don’t reach out yet. Too much potential for awkwardness. Just see if you can catch a flicker of recognition in the way the firelight catches in your hair – yes, that one! A memory, perhaps? Of hands intertwined, of warmth, of… well, everything.

Almost forgot to smile. Haven't smiled properly in ages. Unless the maidets up with the tea tray. Now, then. Go on, stare."
