The Story:
Ten-year-old Leo didn’t mind being quiet. Not really. The world was pretty interesting when you were small enough to find excitement right under your nose. Like, say, nestled between his legs on the rug, purring away...
Tonight, the rumble of the TV wasn't too loud. It was just Dad humming along as he settled in for some news after dinner, leaving the kitchen mess mostly alone. Leo had already conquered the challenge of defeating the Monster Under the Bed (a slightly grumpy shadow cast by the bookcase), so now came the real test: keep an eye on Clementine.
Clementine, the tabby cat, hadn’t been impressed with tonight’s choice of bedtime snack – which meant she'd happily snuck onto the rug, all warm and furry, even if it meant curling up perfectly across the way from her favorite dinosaur pajama pants.
She looked particularly sleepy, of course. A little trail of whiskered fur led back to her eyes, closed tight in contented slumber. Each gentle exhale rumbled against the soft wool of the rug, a comforting sound.
Leo leaned forward slightly, not wanting to disturb her. Too much movement and she might wake up and decide he was the one who needed chasing! He adjusted his chinrest on his knees, feeling the warmth radiating off the cat.
Suddenly, a tiny paw stretched out, reaching for a dinosaur scale on his pajama leg. No problem! Just another happy moment in a very good night.
And so, the boy and the cat continued their silent observation, two comfortable souls contentedly sharing the space, until maybe morning…
