The Coffee Stain

Scene: Cozy Bookstore - Day

SOUND: Soft jazz music, rustle of pages, gentle chatter

VISUALS: Warm light streams through large windows onto shelves overflowing with books. A comfy armchair sits near the fireplace, slightly askewed by recent activity. The scene is wonderfully cluttered and charming.

Our heroine, ELARA (32), has fiery red hair that’s usually just a little bit wild, trailing a few strands around her spectacles perched on her nose. She’s wearing a chunky knit sweater and looks utterly comfortable. Right now, she’s leaning right into LIAM (35) who stands opposite her, equally relaxed, a bemused smile playing on his lips. They're both holding mugs of coffee… which means...

(SCENE START)

Elara lets out a delighted squeak as Liam turns another page of “Winesburg” – their current obsession – and a splash hits the table. Not too much; just a happy cascade of warm liquid.

“Close!” Elara exclaims, eyes twinkling, oblivious to the slight sheen already forming on the wooden floorboards.

Liam chuckles, a deep sound that always feels like home. "Always close," he agrees, tilting his head back to grin at her, perfectly capturing the evidence of the spilled coffee with one mug.

Suddenly, a second splash! This time, less graceful. Elara’s elbow bumps against Liam’s, sending his cup away from its precarious perch.

"Oops!" they both laugh, a perfect harmony of surprise and affection.

They lean closer together, the scent of roasted beans and caffeine filling the air. Her hand brushes his sleeve. His fingers instinctively reach up to restel hers.

For a moment, everything fades: the quiet hum of the city outside, the occasional turn of a page, the slightly grumpy owner who’es been watching them for weeks. Just them, the book, and the deliciousness of being completely content.

Then, a small sigh. A shared glance. And then…

One of them adjusts, ever so gently, the way the other’s arm falls across their shoulders.

It had been a week since they were first spotted here, browsing the shelves, each lost in their own world until a stack of Dickens novels tumbled down between them. Since then, they’ve been regulars – a little shy, definitely smitten, and undeniably happy to be surrounded by all these lovely books.

But today, something felt different. More than usual.

As they settle deeper into themselves, almost without noticing, the camera focuses on their hands – intertwined beneath the mugs, a hint of warmth radiating outwards.

Life isn’t always perfect. There was that awkward date last month… or perhaps it was the fact that neither of them said anything when they tripped over each other’s feet during the Christmas party. But tonight, there's only joy. Tonight, there's them.
