Here goes…

“The light has always been good here, hasn’t it? Always felt likeed to us, even when things were tight. This linen, too, for years. Feels familiar under fingertips, doesn’t it? Like a well-worn favourite. Not too comfortable, not clinging. Just right.”

We shift slightly, adjusting the sleeve of the dress, a small movement almost imperceptible, yet ours. “Remember the last time we had this one, did we? The scent of rain outside, the clink of glasses, him humming off-key by the fireplace…” A slight smile plays around the lips, a little hesitant, maybe more memory than reality.

"You look different today, though. Less surprised. Or perhaps less willing to admit there was anything amiss all along." We tilt our head ever so gently, mirroring the angle of the necklaced earring, the silver catching the sunlight filtering through the windowpane. "It’s been a while, then. Too long?”

There’ a pause, naturally. A silence hangs heavy, laced with both affection and something akin to apprehension. It could be a sighing breath, easily missed. “That halfsmile isn’t entirely new, is it? Have had it since…well, since.*”

Our gaze drifts back to you, ‘you,’ the silent observer. Perhaps a touch wary, perhaps hopeful. “Are you sure you wanted to come round? Didn’t think you would. After all, these rooms haven’t changed much, have they? Except, possibly, for us.”

Another subtle shift – the hand rests lightly on the table edge, fingers tracing the curve of the glass, which might have held wine, or memories. ”So, what were you thinking, really?” We ask quietly, turning back towards you, finally, fully, invitingly. Now, if only you weren’t afraid to answer."
