Here goes…

“There. That’s better,” I murmur, voice a touch too soft, almost to ourselves. The cable knit shawl was a good call - cashmere, naturally, though he probably wouldn't admit it was ever our cashmere these days. It smells faintly of woodsmoke and his particular brand of stubbornness. He always liked that scent. A little prickly, maybe, but undeniably warm. We haven't had much warmth lately, not really. Not since...well, since everything shifted, didn’t it?

It’s funny, isn’t it? How easily we forgot to notice all the shifting for so long. Like dust motes dancing in the light, content with our oblivious dance until one day, suddenly, there were gaps where the furniture used to be.

And now you’re here, aren’t we? Standing just outside the circle, observing. A slight smile on your face, perhaps—a skeptical curiosity. Or maybe it’s simply boredom, which is often the case with outsiders. Doesn't matter.

We weren't meant to get caught out, were we? This life, perfectly imperfect, messily ours. Just a hint of chaos around the edges – the half glass of wine still sitting on the side table, the book lying open on the armchair, waiting for us to actually read it.

But then again, those things hadn’ed been perfect either, had they? More like comfortably familiar, comfortable even when it hurt sometimes. Now it feels more quiet than that, doesn’t it? Almost empty.

Looking at you, see? Not quite judging, certainly not demanding. Just...watching. Like you’ve permission to fidget – catch yourself smoothing down the hem of your skirt, the way you do – a subtle reminder that we're human, flawed, beautiful.

So, turn away, don’t turn away. Let us hold onto something, for a moment longer. That feeling, remember? Before the next question, before the inevitable doubt creeps back in.”

Now over to you! Let us know what you think and if you would like us to refine the monologue further! 😊
