The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn't it? Not unpleasant, not really – it’s our wool, after all, used to be. Or so we thought. The cable knit isn’t quite as comforting as it was when everything felt simpler - more like a quiet agreement than a silent struggle then. Now it’s...well, now it’s almostness. Here it is, tucked into the cuff of this skirt, a little bit worn, a little bit familiar. Like us.
There were crumbs, didn’t there? Fromset with Darjeeling, probably. Always did love those biscuits. Your grandmother always said you had a good eye for detail - most people missed them. Almost missed the way the light caught the dust motes dancing in the fireplace last night, too. Almost.
You haven’t spoken much since then, of course. Just stood there, a silhouette against the gloom, holding the half-empty glass. A nice enough picture, really. Though perhaps a touch too willing to let things drift. It has been rather a while, hasn’t it? Since the last time you noticed the slight stiffness in our shoulders.
We weren't arguing, exactly. More like...expecting. Expecting you to notice, eventually. Toed that foot ever so gently, shifted the weight in our heel. That small act, that tiny acknowledgement of each other. And yet, mostly silence.
Now you’re staring. A little hesitant, aren’t you? Like you might break through the stillness. Which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing, would it? This gaze of yours, though – it’s been missing for ages.
So, go ahead. Look. See the hint of acceptance in the curve of our lip. Maybe even a trace of hope. Afterall, wasn't it beautiful once? Didn't think so."
