(The light is always good, isn't it?) That golden hour glow, slinking around the edges of the room, catching dust motes dancing in the quiet. Not too bright – not to notice everything. We never noticed too much, did we? Not really. For years, anyway. These boots, for instance –a touch worn, leather softened by countless walks, but still perfectly serviceable. Comfortable. Likeable, even. Unlike the silk shirt, perhaps. A little fussy, a bit proud. Always had to be ‘right’, didn’t he?

It’s been… well, longer than we thought it would be, hasn’t it? Since the last time the scent of woodsmoke drifted in off the garden. He washed up later, of course, all blubbery reassurance and apologies. Mostly. Theds were sitting out nicely on the table then, weren't they? Ourds. Though, sometimes, when the light caught his hair just so...it felt like those were ours.

We haven’t said anything yet, have we? It’s comfortable being silent sometimes. Less likely to get things wrong. More certain than ever, perhaps, that he wouldn’t look back. This way, no. No obviousness. Just these hands, resting lightly on the sleeve of the chair. Almost casual, doesn't seem that way though, do it?

A flicker of recognition in your eyes, yes? A ghost of a smile playing on yours. Just a whisper of hope, buried beneath layers of quiet acceptance. And here we are, then. In the stillness. Now, lets see what happens next."
