The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not terribly so, not really, but notice. Notice the way it catches the light around the cuffs of your sleeve – a sliver of gold where it shouldn’t be quite so muted. It was always about the details with you, wasn’t it? Always noticing when the collar turned up too high, or if the wine had been served a little chilled.

It hasn’t felt like years, has it? Maybe five? Feels more like yesterday sometimes, which isn’t to say it wasn’t then…just that maybe this time will be different. We used to stand in rooms like these, didn't we? The fireplace should be crackling softly, the scent of woodsmoke hinting at warmth, but there’s only the low hum of the city outside, and the ghost of a chill that never truly left anyway.

That look on your face, though. A flicker of recognition, definitely. A hint of apprehension. Like you know we both knew something was brewing beneath the surface all along. And perhaps we did. This gaze yours, steadying, questioning…almost inviting. Almost.

Don'd need many cues, do we? Just one small acknowledgement of the memory clinging to the hem of your coat. See? A tiny wrinkle in the fabric, mirroring the crease lines round our eyes.

So go ahead. Let your curiosity linger. Let yourself wonder what exactly we were fighting over back then, or whether it even mattered. We’ve got plenty of time to figure it out now.”
