“There.” That’s the third time you’ve cleared your throat since we got here. Not a bad sound, not really - more a rustle than a judgement usually. But still…it’s there. Like a pebble on a smooth surface, maybe one you didn't even notice was there until recently. It’s been ages, hasn’t it? Longer than it should have been, certainly. Ten years. At least. Or was it eleven? The memory’s a bit blurry these days, if truth be told.

These boots were a bargain, weren’t they? Leather, definitely worn, but comfortable. Comfortable to keep away too many questions for so long. This cardigan, well, Mum knitted it. Mostly brown wool, obviously – she liked things practical. And warm. We needed warmth then. When he left, after all. Didn’t need much, did we? Just a quiet life, tucked up with the cats...almost.

Your eyes flickered when you sawed the roast yesterday. Nervousness, perhaps? Or recognition? Probably nervousness. You look different now, don’t you? Smoother edges, less obvious trace of those restless nights. Still drifting, though. Always drifting.

We used to know exactly where we were going, didn'-’t we? Everything felt certain then, almost like this feeling, doesn’t it? A muted expectancy. Almost. Now, it’s just us, and the ghosts of the past, and the occasional noise from outside.

So go ahead, clear your throat again. Let it hang in the air for a minute. It’s not like we haven’t done this before, has it?”
