The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not that we don’t love the texture - not to say we haven’t loved everything about these past ten years, really. It’s more...familiarity, isn’t it? A little too familiar sometimes. Like a well-worn favorite armchair, comfortable enough to sink into but maybe needing dusting. Look down at your shoes – sensible leather, simple. No need for fuss here, not usually. We never did need much.

We were laughing then, weren't there? Just after tea, the rain was doing its gentle drumming against the windowpanes, perfect. That half glass of Burgundy still lingering on your tongue when you said something perfectly mundane about your mother’s garden – ‘Lovely roses, aren’t they?’ – and we both smiled, didn’t we? But now…now it’s quiet. This has been quieter lately. The spark hasn’t exactly gone out, not yet – more like a flickering candle in a draught.

You’re watching us, of course. Always watching. Maybe with a hint of fondness, perhaps even a touch of bewilderment. You look almost hopeful, which is nice. After all, hadn’”t you always thought so? Well, maybe.

That eyebrow – you’re furrowing one, aren’t you? Doubtful eyes, everyone says. It wasn’t that bad, though, had it? When he left, mostly. Mostly fine. A bit lonely, certainly. And ever since, we’ve kept things ticking along, dutifully, quietly. Perhaps a little too diligently.

See that slight turn of the mouth? A trace of amusement, definitely. A secret, wouldn't you agree? We've held onto plenty of secrets over the years. So, go ahead. Keep watching. Let yourself wonder what we're thinking, what we’re feeling – besides, perhaps, a tiny flicker of hope that maybe, just maybe, we remember why we liked being seen."
