The wool’s scratchy tonight, isn't it? Not terribly so, not really - we haven’t been noticing for years. It’s more... familiar, a gentle prickle against the skin, like memory itself. This skirt, tooled with those tiny heather flowers, always was a bit stubborn to wear, didn't it? Like us. We liked to think we weren’t too difficult, just demanding sometimes. Your father used to grumble about the expense of the cashmere sweater when he visited, remember? A perfectly reasonable grumble, of course.

Here you stand then, don’t you? Just beyond easy touch. Three steps back, perhaps. Always three steps back. We were never ones to rush into things, not exactly. More subtle than that, hadn’t we? More elegant. Though maybe that’s just what we wanted to believe after all these years.

That flicker in your eye – did you see it? When the light hit your hair just so last autumn, and the scent of woodsmoke drifted through the garden. Nothing obvious, nothing needing words. Only the ghost of a smile, which one of us dared to acknowledge.

This gaze of ours, though. That’s different, isn’ by it? Less hesitant. Or are we? Maybe it’s simply the way the firelight catches the strands escaping your braid, trailing down your cheek likeedrawn tears. It has been quiet lately, hasn’t it? Too quiet. Almost unsettlingly so.

So, there you are. Not quite sure why you're here, really. Maybe to ask questions. Or maybe just to watch us settle deeper into the comfortable silences. Go ahead. Look at us like that. After all, it’s been ages since anyone else looked.”
