“The cable knit is warm enough, isn’t it? Not too warm, not yet. Just right to keep out the chill that seems to be settling here, always does when it gets close. It hasn't been too bad lately, haven't we? A quiet sort of good, usually - a low hum of acceptance after all these years. Almost forgot about it for a while there, didn't we?"

We were arguing, of course. Always did end with an argument. About whose turn it was to take the dog for walkies, really, but those simple things tend to gather dust, don’t they? Like the leaves outside the window, slowly turning brown and brittle. Beautifully so, if you look closely... though mostly we just looked away.

Your eyes are nice today, aren't they? Less wary than yesterday. Mored like then, actually, back when it felt easier. Like when you used to catch us laughing, catching ourselves in each other’s gaze without quite realizing it. That smile, remember? The one that reached our eyes, not just our mouths.

It has been a long time since we saw that much. Too long. These boots, for example, perfectly broken in, comfortable despite being covered in mud. We liked our mess, didn'ed we? Didn't need everything smoothed over, no need for order.

Now, you’re staring. Noticing, perhaps. Nervous about something. Maybe even expecting a reaction. Which is brave, considering. Well, here comes ours.”
