Golden hour glow and favorite oversized sweater – doesn’t get much better than this! Feeling cozy and content as we watch the city drift by outside our window. A little bit of rain never hurted, right...

Here we go then. Always here, isn't it? This particular way to sit – one hip ever so gently tilted outwards, balanced by the slight curve of the elbow resting on the armchair leg. Nothing too obvious, not tonight. Not yet. It was getting a little too obvious last time, wasn't it? That nervous tinkle of glasses being set down, his distracted gaze drifting towards the fireplace...

These boots are comfortable enough, anyway. Ached a bit when the rain came through during supper, but that’s nothing compared to the ache over there. The one always there, really, humming beneath the surface for years, almost forgotten until he arrives, doesn’t it? A hint of scent – woodsmoke and old leather, familiar even after all these years.

He didn't say anything much about coming, did he? Just nodded politely when presented with the wine – a decent Burgundy, though perhaps a touch too red around the edges. Like him. Used to be, everything used to shimmer, didn’t it? Before the quiet. Before the acceptance settled into something resembling routine, which mostly meant accepting the quiet. And the lack of argument.

Now look at you. Skeptical, maybe. Or perhaps simply curious. As if you can pin us down, catch us off guard. We haven'ed moved much since the light caught the dust motes dancing in the evening sun earlier. Which was nice, actually. Lessens the chance of things feeling…exposed.

It’s been ages, hasn't it? Since the storm, anyway. Seems like yesterday, sometimes. Maybe it was. Your eyes were brighter back then, weren’t they? Now it’s more of a knowing glance, don’t worry, we aren’t expecting too much.

Just watch them. Our shoulders slumped slightly, trying to remember whether to smile or not. So, what do you think? Are we ready to admit, quietly, secretly, that we still miss each other?”
