Okay, let’s do this! Here's our monologue - assuming we're a bit rumpled but resolutely ourselves...

(A slight tilt of the head, one hand rests loosely on an armchair armrest – perhaps a little too close to the edge).

“There. That’s nice, isn’t it?” We say it so casually, don’t we? ‘Nice.’ Like it was nothing, really. Just another evening spent here, amidst these books and dust motes dancing in the late afternoon light. Which, admittedly, can be rather lovely when it suits us. Though lately, more often than not, it’s been a touch gloomy – hasn’t it? Not bad, never bad, just… distant.

We weren’t expecting you, exactly. More that you might arrive eventually. It’s been five years. Five years since the last time the wine wasn’ted – although, did that ever truly matter? Your coat looks well worn, doesn’t it? A familiar crease near the pocket, like always. And those eyes, still a shade too bright for a man who shouldered his share of the burden all those years ago.

Remember the scent of rain on pavement after the garden party? Or the way you used to hum off-key while brewing coffee? Small things. Tiny sparks, easily missed.

This scarf, though, feels particularly heavy tonight. Cashmere, naturally. Always expensive taste. But maybe a bit too much effort sometimes. Did he think so, too? Perhaps. He certainly didn’ the silver well.”

(A small smile plays around the corner of our lips, a hint of amusement mixed with something else…) “So, there. Didn’t look half bad. Now then, about that gaze…”
